CBC TV Series Heartland

Happy Thursday!

Nowadays, mindless reality TV shows like Jersey Shore,  Teen Mom , Honey Boo Boo and The Bachelorette/The Bachelor/Bachelor Pad are extremely popular.  Whereas wholesome TV shows, that are actually Canadian, such as Heartland, are not very popular.   Why is this?  Most people in our class have probably never even heard of Heartland, which is a CBC series about horses that has been around for six seasons now.

My Uncle Tony Lahaye actually works on the series of Heartland, as the  third assistant director, which is why I might be a bit biased towards the show.  The first time I watched it though, I was not even remotely interested, much to my Uncle’s disappointment.  Yet, as I watched more and more of the show, I couldn’t help but fall in love with the characters!   The family on the show is very loving and supportive of one another, and watching the character’s interactions with one another can be quite humorous.

Most teens are not fans of this show, as they prefer shows with drama, partying, fighting, fist pumping, pregnancies and domestic issues, and chubby little pageant girls with crazy, un-civilized mothers.  You can probably assume that I’m talking about Alana Thompson’s mother, June who has a “fork lift foot”.  Shows in which a man or woman is attempting to find a mate (Bachelorette/ Bachelor) or competing for money (Bachelor Pad) also seem to easily entice a large audience.   If you watch Heartland, though, you may be drawn to it for the fact that it DOESN’T contain any of this.

In the middle of this picture, around my family, is a new addition to the Heartland series - Alisha Newton (who plays character Georgie).

Heartland is like a breath of fresh air.  The two main characters, Amber Marshall and Graham Wardle have a beautiful relationship; they are adorable together.  They treat each other with respect, with is an element that is lacking in most relationships on reality TV shows.  The filming is amazing, the scenes are breathtaking and the storyline is enticing.  It’s quite cool watching a TV series where you can see the magnificent mountain’s, trees and sky that exist here in Alberta.

Heartland airs on Sunday nights, on CBC at 7:00 p.m. – try watching it, see what you think!  It may teach you a little more than Honey Boo Boo.  Please don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy reality TV, but sometimes it’s nice to watch something a little more innocent.  Something that has morals.

  1. Hi Riley!
First off, I would just like to say I completly agree with you! I first heard of Heartland through the book series that it was based off of in 6th grade. From what I can remember it was an interesting book with an intriguing storyline. Even though I have only watched Heartland a handful of times I do believe that it is one of the more interesting shows on television that actually has a story to tell rather than just being about who can be party the hardest.

  2. I'm glad you feel that way Mariam! I actually didn't realize until now that Heartland was originally a book series! Also, Heartland is better then ever before, as a new character has been introduced into the 6th series. Her name is Georgie, played by Alisha Newton. You can get more info on her at:

I was actually lucky enough to meet Alisha; she is an extremely outgoing and sweet little girl.

  3. Wow! This season of Heartland sounds like it's going to be really intense! Also, I really like the sound of Alisha's character. Georgie sounds like a character that would be really dun to watch! Maybe I will give Heartland another shot!
