It came as quite a shock to the viewers when one character on the show, Snooki, and her boyfriend, Jionni, had a child together. The happy new parents named their baby boy Lorenzo and shortly after the pregnancy was discovered also got engaged. As a newly formed family, they should be receiving Congratulations and Best Wishes from everyone, however being so well-known in the media this is never the case.

Lately it seems this initial shock is turning more into criticism. This mainly stems from her history on Jersey Shore and her as the 'star partier' on the show. People seem to be bashing her from all angles. Members on Facebook and Twitter are posting comments about her apparent bad mothering because she is constantly taking pictures of her and her child or just because of her reputation of the television show. It is quite sad and extremely judgmental. These individuals who are saying such harsh things don't even know who she is and have never met her, it's all based on how she was portrayed in the the show. Although the public continues to put her and her family down, Snooki continues to hold her head up high and live her new life. She commented on People magazine about her changed world saying, "The partying is long gone, I'm a new person."

I totally agree with you Corrine. So what if Snooki partied too hard, acted stupid and got drunk on a TV show? You're right; people and the media are way to judgmental and critical when it comes to celebrities. I don't see how they can be so mean. Snooki's feelings must be hurt after hearing such negative comments about her mothering skills. I must admit that on the show, she was extremely inappropriate at times, yet that doesn't mean that she will be a bad mother. None of us know the real Snooki. How can you know somebody if you haven't even met them? Honestly, I would probably go on Jersey Shore and party if I got the chance. We only live once; who wouldn't want to make a fortune while having the time of their life? On Jersey Shore she wasn't a positive role model, but maybe she will be a good role model for her baby. I really do believe that she loves Jionni, and I really hope that their relationship works out. I am going to give Snooki the benefit of the doubt just like you Corrine.
ReplyDeleteI'm rooting for you Snooki! I believe you have it in you to be a good mama to Lorenzo =)
Hi Corrine,
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you! I think it is absolutely ridicuous the scrutiny she is under. Before she had even given birth to Lorenzo people were saying she was going to be a terrible mother, not even giving her a chance to enjoy her pregnancy without the constant negativity. Most young people have a time in their lives where they go out and enjoy the party lifefstyle, that doesn't mean we are all going to be terrible parents one day. Some of us just have to adjust and grow up at a different rate.
This most certainly isn't the fist time that a celebrity has been bashed for their parenting skills though. Britney Spears went through much of the same thing with her two sons. One particular moment found her walking the streets and tripping while carrying her child, almost dropping him. Many started to question her mothering skills, but new mothers make mistakes like this all the time. Imagine having to be a new mother while in the spotlight, having hundreds of cameras around you trying to get the "best shot." Im sure this is the same sort of issue Snooki is dealing with or will have to deal with in the fure. Hopefully she will be able to ignore and be the best mother she can be to little baby Lorenzo.
Amber on Teen Mom is also under constant scrutiny. Yet, unlike Snooki, she kind of deserves to be. Amber was charged for domestic violence against her boyfriend, Garry, and was under treatment for her addiction to prescribed medication. Amber also had anger management problems. Unfortunately, these personal issues she had took away her effectiveness at being a good mother. So yes, let's just bash Snooki when she gives us a reason to. Just like the media bashed Amber when she gave us a reason to, and just like we bashed Michael Jackson, when he held his baby over a balcony. For now, people should be encouraging Snooki and giving her positive feedback. I loved your comment Megan.
ReplyDeleteYea it is so true, nowadays it seems like every new celebrity parent is under inspection by the media and public. I do suppose the celebrities signed up for all the attention though with the career paths they chose, but why is it mostly negative? Why do they create these stories into negative ones when they have so much potential to be the complete opposite? I mean, we all like happy endings here, but it seems those never take the lead. It's really sad and disappointing in today's society but props to Snooki for keeping on doing what she feels is right.
ReplyDeleteI really like that you brought up Teen Mom Riley. I was thinking about that show and 16 and Pregnant the whole time I read this post. Those shows highlight what else is happening out there, and to me, Snooki's parenting "issues" don't even come close to the issues portrayed in reality teen pregnancy shows. How can anyone say bad things about Snooki when she is old enough to be responsible for her actions, ahs enough money to support a family, and is in a loving relationship?
ReplyDeleteAs for the pictures? I think if Snooki wasn't directly posting pictures herself then the paparazzi would be. As Corinne mentioned, what new mom doesn't take a million photos of her first-born child? You should see all of my friends' Facebook walls... it's babies galore! And I haven't ever questioned any of those friends' ability to parent because they post pictures of their child on facebook.
In all honesty, I think Snooki's 15 minutes of fame will be over before Lorenzo is old enough to be affected by any of the publicity, and the media is just trying to earn as much off her as they can before she falls off everyone's radar.
Exactly Allie! Well said. Many mothers on Teen Mom have a horrible relationship with the father of their child, and some have never even worked a day in their life.
ReplyDeleteHey Corinne,
ReplyDeleteI would definitely have to agree with you on this topic about Snooki being ridiculed for being a mother. Many people go through a stage in their life where they party hard, and just want to have a good time. In most cases this is just a short-lived phase in a persons life and it’s almost a growing experience for them. I think that Snooki had her fun on the show but since becoming pregnant and having a child I believe she is a new person. I may be wrong but I think that Snooki has matured since her party days at the Jersey Shore. Just because she made some mistakes and did some stupid things in the past doesn’t mean that she should be judged as a bad mother. I guess time will tell and we will have to see how it all plays out.
