The movie
Pitch Perfect, directed by Jason Moore, has been drawing quite a few people
to the theatres this week. I saw it at
Empire theatre, after hearing great reviews from friends and fellow students. Sure enough, the only seats available were
those in the front row. It has a number
of great, well-known actresses, such as Anna Kendrick (from Twilight) and Brittany
Snow (from John Tucker Must Die). It
also includes an up and coming actress Rebel Wilson, who plays a hilarious and outgoing character named Fat Amy. You may
recognize Rebel Wilson from the well-known movie Bridesmaids.
Pitch Perfect was a funny, wonderful, feel good movie about having
fun, putting yourself out there and following your dreams. I would give it five stars; I seriously felt like clapping after the movie ended. Basically, it was a battle between two University groups, one all female group, named the Barden Bellas, and an all male group, named the Treblemakers, to win a prize for the best a cappella performance. The actors all have impressive singing voices
and dance movies that will awe you. My mouth was seriously hanging out a couple of times throughout the film. In the
beginning, Audrey, played by Anna Camp, the leader of the Barden Bellas group was afraid of change but near the end of the movie, she realizes that
change can be a good thing and that life is worth taking risks. This is a great motto, as many people go
through life missing out on so many things because their scared or embarrassed about
what the outcome could be. Have any of
you done this? I know I have. Care to share an experience?
The only problem I had with Pitch Perfect is that it follows a growing trend I have noticed in movies: it
contains a funny fat girl. Why is
this? Why does the fat girl always have
to be so funny and so willing to make fun of her own body? Can she not be normal or
play a popular character? Fat Amy is hilarious, yet the whole time actor Rebel Wilson is poking fun at her
body. I laughed at every single joke Fat Amy made, yet I wonder how she Rebel really feels about her body, after having to
stand with stick thin actresses all day during filming. Maybe she is truly happy with herself. If she is, then it’s awesome that she can poke
fun at her body so much on-screen.
I see Rebel Wilson as being a great role model for
girls in our society, as there is always so much pressure for young girls to
skinny. I love that she isn’t! She looks like a typical girl that I might
see at a shopping mall, or a restaurant, or a grocery store. On screen, character Fat Amy accepts herself
and has an extremely high level of confidence.
She says what she wants and does what she wants, not letting other’s
side-way glances bother her. What a beautiful thing!
If you have yet to see Pitch Perfect, please do yourself a favor and get you butt to the nearest theatre.

Hi Riley,
ReplyDeleteI have been absolutely dying to see this movie! I hear the commericals on the radio almost everyday and I think it sounds absolutely hilarious!I love any type of movie that revolves around music and competitions and I can't wait to see this one. I was so excited when I saw that Rebel Wilson was in it, I thought she was absolutely hilarious in her role in Bridesmaids; she really added to an already hilarious movie.
I do agree that it is kind of weird that recently the "funny girls" in movies are always overweight. It definitely opens a new windown in the movie industry, but does make me wonder if their roles are affected by this. But I do think that she will and is a great role model for individuals growing up in today's society. It proves that you really don't have to be a size zero in order to get the "good roles" in Hollywood; you really just have to be youreslf. The idea that her character exudes self confidence is also a wonderful addition to the moving, once again showing the idea that everyone should be happy with who they are.
I thank you so much for your review of Pitch Perfect without giving away the entire storyline! I can definitely say that I will more than happily pay to see this movie in the theaters and I am sure I will enjoy every moment of it!
You are welcome! I definitely didn't want to give away the storyline, so I'm glad that I accomplished my goal. The movie just has way too many awesome scenes that people just need to see for themselves. You will have to let me know that you think of it Pitch Perfect after you watch it.
ReplyDeleteHi Riley!
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to go see this movie for quite some time, but I've been distracted with other movies like Sinister and Paranormal activity 4. I would have really loved to see this movie, especially after reading your blog post about it. It seems so funny and a movie that I would really enjoy! I like how you can describe this movie without really telling the whole story line. I suck at these kind of things that I usually ruin the movie for people haha.
I do agree with you about how there is a growing trend on fat girls. I wonder why too and I wonder if it affects them with their life personally. Maybe their promoting it as a way to show that people that it's okay to be big or thin? or maybe it's just a way to create humor, who knows?
I wish there were more girls who were comfortable with their body. I agree that for girls in our society, there is always so much pressure to be skinny and the want to be skinny. There is not one girl i've known who hasn't hated their body at some point. We're all made out to be the way we're supposed to be and if we don't like it, we can fix it but in healthy ways. I personally think theres too much expectations in this society and theres a need of wanting to be wanted and being skinny or thin is one of the expectations.
