Jersey Shore's Last Season

Well season 6 of the Jersey Shore will be the last installment of this controversial series. This show once topped the charts on MTV, but in recent seasons ratings have slowly been dropping as well as the number of viewers and MTV has decided that they are going to cancel the show. Many people will be sad to see it go while others will be thankful that it is finally over.

I’ll admit that after watching the first season of the Jersey Shore I was hooked immediately. To be perfectly honest I have no idea why the show was so addicting because all it showed were a bunch of people partying under the influence every episode. But something about that just got my attention and I just had to watch the show. I watched the show religiously until beginning of season 4 when I just got sick of seeing the same thing over and over again. It seemed as though the show became more and more staged as the seasons went on and it wasn’t even a reality show anymore. I could be wrong but I believe that the ratings have plummeted because of the repetitiveness and dryness in the last couple of seasons.

The Jersey Shore has received a lot of negative attention over its 5 seasons from cast members getting into fights, to getting arrested for disorderly conduct. The show has been scrutinized since the airing of its first episode because it paints a black mark on the Italian American community. The Italian American community has been outraged by the show and several group Italian based groups such as UNICO, NIAF, the Order Sons of Italy in America and Italian Aware have demanded that the show stop being aired. Many people are claiming that the show is making fun of Italians and giving them a bad rap, but I don’t see it that way at all. I am Italian as well and I personally didn’t think they were making Italians look bad in any way. If anything the show was depicting the lifestyle of young adults and their party mindset in general, not just Italians.

The show may have been given a bad rap from the beginning but that didn’t stop millions of people from watching the show every week. In fact many people actually enjoy watching the show and say that it has no effect on the way they view Italian Americans. A recent survey in America showed that the show actually benefitted the way people view New Jersey. More people were willing to travel to New Jersey that have seen the show versus people who have never seen it.

If you have never seen the show I would recommend getting a taste on October 4th and you can judge the show for yourself or watch the season 6 preview below.

Are there any other former Jersey Shore fanatics like myself or current followers of the show? Do you believe the show gives Italians a bad image? What do you think about MTV cancelling the show after season 6?

  1. I watch Jersey Shore and get made fun of every Thursday! A friend of mine got me into it in the second season and I definitely got hooked. Much like other reality shows (like Teen Mom), I like to watch it because it makes me feel better about my life. But I definitely agree with what you are saying about the lifestyle of all young adults, not just Italians. The things that happen to them are funny because they are true!

As much as I love the show, I feel like cancelling the show now is a good idea. Snooki is pregnant, the Sitch is clean (not causing chaos, hence not as fun), Ron and Sam.. well they will never change, Vinnie is celibate, and Deena and JWoww both have boyfriends! Everyone is getting wifed up and it's just not nearly as exciting and ridiculous as it used to be.
