Looper is Super!

A couple weeks ago I went and saw the movie Looper with Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Emily Blunt. Let me describe the events leading up to the decision to see this flick:

My brother and I decided to go out for drinks and a bite to eat to take a break from work, school and the hustle and bustle of daily life. We went and had a delicious dinner, a few brews and kicked back at Joey's Chinook. Eventually the idea of catching a late night flick was suggested.  I wasn't exactly sure as to what was even out these days (seeing as I'm pretty busy with school and apparently out of the movie loop in regards to what's new and playing in theatres). My brother, being the movie guru, seemed to be up-to-date on all the new films and had a pretty good idea on what ones sounded like 'gooders'.

We discussed a few options and the name of a movie called Looper was brought up. Something sparked my interest about this movie - maybe the odd name? I was intrigued and wanted to know more about the details of this film. My brother quickly explained that it was about time travel, mobs, and had Bruce Willis in it. This short explanation definitely did not sound very appealing - nor did the concept make a lot of sense in my head. Time travel and mobs - really? That's weird. Bruce Willis - hmmm, he's getting old and hasn't really been in much lately. Sounded a bit iffy and like a potential bust to me!

We went through a couple more movie possibilities (all the ones my brother hadn't already seen) and Looper seemed to be the most promising and might have just been worthy of a watch. I obviously got out my iPhone to double check this decision. I went on my handy Flixter app to see the ratings and read up on the reviews. Surprisingly it actually had decent reviews, as well as high ratings! It scored a 93% by critics and a 88% by viewers! Not too shabby for a weird mob time traveling movie?!

Seeing as my brother's explanation didn't do justice - I decided to do a quick search on the Rotten Tomatoes website to see what they had to say about the film and what exactly I was getting myself into. This was the description of the plot:

"In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented - but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a "looper" - a hired gunman, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) - is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good... until the day the mob decides to "close the loop," sending back Joe's future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination" -- (C) Sony (as cited on Flixter Inc., 2012).

So the decision was made -- I was pretty much sold and willing to take the risk. It sounded pretty interesting and I thought that there might be some potentional there. We paid our bill and headed over to the theatre! Needless to say - the twists and turns in the movie were awesome! It had me on the edge of my seat wanting more! Not to mention Joseph Gordon-Levitt was amazingly delicious in the film! The acting was great, the suspension was intense, the movie made you really think, and the child actor Pierce Gagnon, made the movie - plus he was the cutest little kid ever!

I don't want to let all the secrets out about this flick - but I definitely recommend you take the time to go see it! This random sci-fi thriller about "the mob, time travel, and Bruce Willis" was awesome and definitely worth the risk! So basically...

  1. I think I have heard of this movie and my initial reaction was the same as yours. However after reading its scoring by critics/viewers and your review on top of that, I actually would like to check it out! It does make me a little concerned whether it could be confusing at points with all the back and forth time travel, but maybe that wouldn't be such a bad thing. It could actually get the audience more engaged and actually thinking rather than just a dead mind watching a screen.
    Thanks for the suggestion!
