Anywhere you look on the Internet, you're going to find mixed feelings about Justin Bieber. Sure the kid's got millions of fans, but he's got even more haters, and for what?! Because he's dreamy and is stealing the heart of your school yard crush? Because he's talented not only vocally, but with instruments and sports? Or is it because he's Canadian? Oh, I know! It's because he's "gay"! I forgot about the rule that made a young boy "gay" if he became famous for singing prior to his journey with puberty.. and through no fault of his own, sounded like a young girl (similar to any other boy before he hits puberty!) Usher and Justin Timberlake didn't get razzed like this, to name a few other child stars. So why Justin Bieber?
At his concert in Calgary on Friday night while he was changing outfits and preparing for a different song, a video came on the screen talking about how he recognizes the criticism he gets about the way he sounds and the way he looks. People questioning him, asking if him cutting his hair and changing his sound was an attempt at staying relevant, or if he was just maturing. Interviewers telling him that once his voice changed, he would lose his talent and his fame would stop. And for those haters who preach "he will fall off the face of the pop scene as soon as he hits puberty".. have a listen.
As you can tell, I'm an avid Justin Bieber fan. My name is Dani and I'm a 23 year old Justin Bieber addict. I've got posters and pillows, a duvet cover and bed sheets.. to name a few things. I went to his concert on Friday night and it was the most amazingly mind blowing, life altering, heart stopping shows I've ever been to. *sigh* The kid's got talent! Take away the theatrics, music and dancing and what you've got left is a kid filled with talent. The kind of talent that makes you angry because there is so much wrapped up in one person! It's jealousy really..
Even if you aren't a crazy fan like myself and almost all of the 7-18 year old girls in the world, at least respect the kid for his talent. It is undeniable, and if one can't even admit respect for the talent.. well that's a sure sign of jealousy and hostility (towards someone you've never even met, no less). Want to open your mind a little bit? Try watching his documentary 'Never say Never'. It's not a concert movie, it's a documentary describing his journey from being an average, every day kid- to selling out Madison Square Garden in under 30 seconds.
It might not get you to like his music and blast it in your car on the way to work.. but you may learn a little bit about the kid. You may gain some respect for the guy who came from a small town in Ontario to the United States at 12 years old with his mother on the whim of a man who had a gut feeling that this kid was meant for stardom.
But you know what.. Maybe the haters are right. Maybe a kid who's newest album 'Believe' reached Platinum in less than a week. Maybe the kid who gave up his adolescence and regular life to work his butt off harder than half of the people in Hollywood is really just "gay", a "fag" and "lucky".
I'm interested to know how other people feel about him and what their views are.

Hi Dani,
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with everything that you said about Justin Bieber. I myself am a 22 year old, die hard Justin Bieber fan. I really just cannot get enough of him; I don't understand everyone's hate towards him, you would think that he had started World War III, but really all he is doing is what he loves and he's making millions of people happy while doing it, what's wrong with that? I have so many friends that think I am absolutely ridiculous when it comes to the Biebs. I did everything possible in order to go to his concert on Friday and successfully got tickets the morning of the show. I told everyone that no matter what, I would be going to his concert.
I also saw him the first time he came to Calgary a couple of years ago, and like you pointed out his voice has changed. Really though, who cares? he was a young boy when he started and he grew up in front of our eyes. I think people should respect him that much more for doing just that. His performances have also grown so much. When he first came his performance was more of a concert, with him singing and doing a few dance moves. Now he has turned his concerts into a huge spectacle, with constant dancing, singing and videos.
Overall, I think that everyone who "hates" Justin Bieber really needs to sit down and watch Never Say Never, just to see that he isn't a manufactured pop star like many of the artist out there today; he really worked for what he got and he deserves every moment of it. The video that you mentioned from the concert really got to me, it made me quite sad that people can be so hurtful to others. But I really did enjoy that he included this in his concert, to show all of his young fans that no matter what people say, you can accomplish anything; don't let anyone bring you down. In the end I think that he is a wonderful role model for young kids, and us older fans too! Anyone who disagress should really just sit back and look at what this kid has accomplished and respect him for that, whether you enjoy his music or not.
Hey Dani. Great blog post! I really enjoyed reading it.
ReplyDeleteI must admit that I do not particularly like Justin Bieber, I realize that he is EXTREMELY talented, but I just don't enjoy the kind of music he sings. I really respect him as an artist though, and would never hate on him because I realize that he has worked really hard.
In some ways, I feel really bad for him that he has so many haters. I can only imagine how hard that would be to deal with. Honestly, has no one ever heard of the saying: "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all?"
Dani, that's wonderful that you were able to go to the concert. My sister would be so jealous of you! I heard only good things about it .... the radio stations non-stop had girls calling in screaming about how cool it was, and what a great singer/performer Justin Bieber is.
Although I can't say I like too many of his songs, he seems like a sweet, genuine, down to earth kid with crazy music abilities. You're right, people must be jelous. What else could it be? Also, I don't see how you can be gay if your dating someone named Selena Gomez .. like really, how stupid. On a side note, who cares even if he was gay? I certainly wouldn't. Why do people use the term gay as an insult? This is completely not acceptable.
I have to say... I am one of those people who doesn't like Justin Beiber. I can't really pinpoint why specifically, but there is just something about him that gets under my skin and really bothers me. Maybe it's his singing and the types of songs he sings or his style in general. I am just definitely not one of those 'beliebers'.
ReplyDeleteMy sister did tell me a story recently though of how he made a child's wish come true. This 16 year old girl is really sick and and all she wanted was to meet Justin Beiber. When he found out, it was only a matter of days and he not only met her, but gave her a signed guitar. Here's the link if you want to check it out: http://www.makeawish.ca/wish_stories/news/read/2154
It's actually a really touching story and there is a picture of the girl there too.
After hearing that, my respect has risen so much for him. Even though I don't care for his music, I respect him as a person for what he is doing for people out there, whether it is through his music or making wishes come true.
Hey Megan, Riley and Corinne! It was really great to hear your opinions about Bieber! Thank you Corinne and Riley for being honest! I know not everybody likes him, but like I said in my post.. being able to appreciate the talent is awesome!
ReplyDeleteRiley, I agree with what you said about people using "gay" as an insult. I definitely never thought about it like that, and it was great to hear your perspective. Riley, another great thing that I love about Bieber is his need to give back. He's more thoughtful than any other 18 year old, and he considers giving back to the less fortunate just as, if not more important as doing shows, etc.
I'm glad that even the non-beliebers and respect him!
Bieber Love!
