Newsflash: Students are Stressed!
A recent study was done and the findings were shocking!! Students now are more stressed than people during the Depression!!! This is my fifth year in university, and I think I can honestly say I've been stressed out. I've dealt with depression and other stressful things throughout my academic career, but I would never even think to compare how I feel to the Great Depression!!
I do believe that in today's society, university students are held to a much higher standard than our parents and grandparents were. It was typical for our grandparents' generation to perhaps finish high school, then delve right into the work force. For our parents, things were a bit different. University was more suggested and was viewed as very prestigious. Students would take five classes and would graduate in four years. For our generation, university degrees are being handed out like candy. It's more of a social norm to attend university after finishing high school. However the expectations are different. More students are paying for university on their own, and the cost of tuition and living are skyrocketing. Speaking from a personal perspective, in my 5 years of university I've never had to take out a student loan. I do not borrow money from my parents, and my parents are by no means well off (they are teachers). The only way I can afford to put myself through school and afford living away from home is by working two full time jobs while I do my undergraduate degree. It seems as though it is the norm for students today to take more than the typical 4 years to finish a degree, and a lot of sources attribute this to the fact that students are needing to work throughout the school year, just so they can pay for school.
In thinking about things that could potentially have been the source of why stress seems to be higher for us compared to our parents and grandparents, I thought technology could have something to do with it. I know that 60% of my stress comes from my computer being dead, my internet cutting out, my computer losing information, or my cell phone freezing. These are things that happen on a daily basis and impact essentially our entire existence. If our internet cuts out, we lose access to our plethora of resources that we need to accomplish our day to day work.
Do you agree that we are more stressed than our grandparents were? Why do you think it is? Do you think the increased tuition is the problem, or perhaps the technology take-over?
'Tis the Season for Ugly Christmas Sweater Parties!
![]() |
Taken: Kelly Hammond, 2010 |
In the past few years, I have found that ugly Christmas sweater parties are becoming more and more prevalent. It leads me to wonder where this new "tradition" came from?
I did some research, and I found some very interesting facts about the potential origin story of the "ugly sweater party". You'll be excited to hear that the potential origin of the USP begins in Vancouver, Canada! In 2001, three men wrote a book called Ugly Sweater Party Book: The Definitive Guide to Get your Ugly On. Since then, USP's have ended up on a very prestigious list called "Stuff White People Like" in 2008. It seems as though in the past 10 years, ugly sweater parties have boomed throughout the nation. Most people go to stores like Value Village and rummage through the old clothes for a "good" sweater. But the lucky ones, we find some sexy gems in our grandparents closets. The sweaters all shown in the picture above were found in my very own grandparents' closet.
We all remember growing up and year after year, watching Bill Cosby sport the old man's wooly sweater, or witnessing Chevy Chase's questionable winter attire. Everyone had that grade school teacher who had the most heinous themed pullovers that were ever made. Sweaters that looked like they were made by blind, old women who had less than no fashion sense.
I still just want to know who was bored and went through their grandparents closet and said "hmm! I think I'm going to wear this to my Christmas party tonight!!" Have you guys been to ugly Christmas sweater parties? Do the sweaters still itch as much as they did when you were a kid?!

Extreme Cougar Wives
To quote David after the Dentist "Is this real life?!?!?!"
Reality shows have taken a turn for the worst. Coming from me (the reality tv queen), you know that's a really bad sign. I should have seen it coming since there is already a sitcom about cougars running around picking up younger men called Cougar Town starring and produced by Courtney Cox.
It seems as though TLC has been coming out with worse reality television shows than MTV has! I'd much rather watch Jersey Shore and Teen Mom than Here Comes Honey Boo Boo or Extreme Cougar Wives. No matter the television station, reality television is about the typical "every day" person, just living their lives. Shows like the Real World which depict the lives of typical twenty-somethings who aren't rich or famous are what reality television is all about. How often do these "cougars" come around? How often do little sassy hick children participate in beauty pageants and their moms do extreme couponing? These shows seem to be picking out certain kinds of people who will be interesting to film day to day. Though these people do live quite eventful and entertaining lives, they aren't a realistic example of what the population is like.
Bring back more shows like the Real World!!

As a twenty-something female living in today's society, I have run into the term "Facebook official" on a couple different occasions. As social media is growing more prevalent, people are beginning to add more of their personal lives to their online profiles. One of the more recent practices on the Facebook website is adding your relationship status. In your profile in the "about you" section, there will be a part which states that you are in a relationship with 'John Smith', and his name will be linked to his personal Facebook page.
When I was growing up, there were three steps to dating a boy.
- He would ask you to be his girlfriend
- Tell your friends
- Tell your parents
Nowadays, the system is similar but there seems to be another step added!
- He would ask you to be his girlfriend
- Tell your close friends about your new boyfriend
- Tell your parents
- Make it "Facebook official"
Recently, Facebook has thrown another wrench in the mix! If you make your relationship "Facebook official", you will have a special page dedicated to you two! At www.facebook.com/us you will find the pictures you are both tagged in, and information about your relationship. This page is similar to an individual's page in that you can change the profile and cover pictures. The only difference is- you can't delete it!!!!
Are any of you in relationships and/ or have strong feelings about this new app Facebook has added?

Girl Meets World!
Our favourite TGIF gang is making their way back onto our television. Cory Mathews, Topanga Lawrence, and fingers crossed Shawn Hunter, are coming back into our lives. The new show will be called Girl Meets World, and will focus on Cory and Topanga's teenage daughter. The show will also be airing on Disney, so it will most likely be geared towards a younger audience. With the change of network I really hope the new show lives up to the old show.
Growing up with Boy Meets World, and the whole TGIF lineup, is a huge defining point in our generation, and this show is quite nostalgic to the days when TV was actually good. So far Rider Strong has not been asked to come back, but hopefully Cory's best friend will make a guest appearance or two. What I have been wondering is, what have Cory and Topanga been up to? Well I couldn't find anything on Danielle Fishel's character, I did however find out that Cory will be the new Feeny. After all those years of looking up to Mr. Feeny, and being a not so good student, Cory is making his way back into the classroom. I think it would be pretty great if Mr. Feeny is on the show too given how important he was to the series. There are so many great characters from Boy Meets World, that most likely won't be making an appearance in the new show. Who are you hoping will come back?

Silver Linings Playbook is a Gooder!
Recently I went and saw the "Silver Linings Playbook" with Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, and Chris Tucker . It was released on November 21 and has been doing fairly well in the box office - making approximately 6.2 million so far.
This movie has been rated around an 8/10, with critics off RottenTomatoes giving it a solid 90% and the audience giving it a 87%. These ratings are what enticed me to go see the flick - along with Bradley Cooper being a total cutie!
Here's how RottenTomatoes (by Flixter) explains the movies' plot:
"Life doesn't always go according to plan. Pat Solatano (Bradley Cooper) has lost everything -- his house, his job, and his wife. He now finds himself living back with his mother (Jacki Weaver) and father (Robert DeNiro) after spending eight months is a state institution on a plea bargain. Pat is determined to rebuild his life, remain positive and reunite with his wife, despite the challenging circumstances of their separation. All Pat's parents want is for him to get back on his feet-and to share their family's obsession with the Philadelphia Eagles football team. When Pat meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a mysterious girl with problems of her own, things get complicated. Tiffany offers to help Pat reconnect with his wife, but only if he'll do something very important for her in return. As their deal plays out, an unexpected bond begins to form between them, and silver linings appear in both of their lives" -- (C) Weinstein (as cited on Flixter Inc., 2012)
I personally thought this movie was awesome! It was definitely a dry humored movie, although these actors pulled it off! I would say it's more of a romantic comedy - although it targets men just as much as women (with a constant theme of football throughout!). The movie will make you laugh and shake your head at some of the things that go down!
I don't want to give away too much... but the movie is very relatable! It displays the complications and dysfunctions of life, love, marriage, family, and friends. It shows all the flaws and issues of the actors' lives, how love can make one "crazy"/"obsessed", and the gong show drama and baggage that comes along with people's lives. I walked away from the flick thinking, "Wow, that was really a great one!".

Need Some Ideas for New Year's Eve?
New Year's Eve is always a fun and exciting time of the year and the options of celebration events are endless! For me personally, I usually try to get away for New Year's Eve - with the last two times in Whitefish, Montana and the time before those in Varadero, Cuba! Not only is it a blast getting away from reality for a bit, but celebrating the turn of the year with your closest friends or family, is really something special and amazingly fun! I'll tell you a little about my New Year's vacations...
My two best friends and I went to Varadero, Cuba in 2009 for a week over New Year's Eve. We stayed in a 3 star resort, nothing too fancy, and were about a 5 minute walk to the white sandy beach. We had some very interesting experiences in Cuba to say the least. One example that sticks out in my mind was with the hotel staff "losing" all of our passports and not being able to find them until the day before we had to leave. I thought taking our passports when we checked in was a weird request in the first place - but they insisted and said all resort guests had to do so? Needless to say, we obviously ended up getting out of the country, although this particular event had me not very impressed!
Even with this weird and suspicious circumstance, along with a few other interesting events - we still had an absolute blast! While we were there we tried to fit in as much activities and sightseeing as we could. The beach and the ocean were absolutely stunning and was the best thing about the trip by far!
Celebrating New Year's Eve in a developing country was definitely an interesting and different experience from your typical New Year's in downtown Calgary or what not. We attended a New Year's dinner at one of our resort's "higher end" restaurants. Surprisingly we did end up having a pretty delicious dinner - we had the New Year's lobster and crab specials! From there we enjoyed cappuccino's and rum shots (the Cubans' drinks of choice) at the hotel bar. They had a Cuban band setup in the hotel lobby and we salsa danced with hotel staff until the resort's New Year's show commenced. We then went and watched an outside performance near the pools, with singers, dancers, and finally a magic show - which one of our friends ended up being a part of (being the lucky individual to be 'cut' in half - haha).

The time was getting close to midnight and we eventually got ready to take part in the countdown. The hotel guests were invited to the stage with all the performers and we counted down together - with people from all over the world! Once we got to "1", champagne bottles shot off, and the music and dancing commenced! The party eventually spread to the beach with a bunch of the resorts guests, some of the hotel staff and even locals.
Needless to say, it was a great experience, extremely fun, and completely different from any other New Year's I had taken part of prior to that! I definitely recommend a tropical New Year's getaway!

My ideal New Year's vacation is heading to Whitefish, Montana. It's a pretty reasonable drive (approx. 5.5 hours from Calgary), and it feels like you're there in no time! Not to mention the drive is beautiful! My friends and I went to Whitefish for New Year's in 2010 and 2011. Both times being just as fun as the other!
The benefits of staying in the states include: cheap accommodation, cheap food, cheap drinks, awesome shopping, reasonably priced activities (and lots of them), and cheap gas! All these items are cheaper in comparison to prices here in Calgary! Such good deals... You will constantly ask: "What? Wait! How much? Sorry, how much? Are you sure?!?!"
For a group of 10 people to rent a place on the ski hill, we paid approx. $300 each for accommodation, food, and drinks for 4 nights. We had an an awesome condo with all the amenities we needed. Our place had the ski-in and ski-out access, a communal hot tub, and was walking distance to the ski village! A steal of a deal I think!
Whitefish is an absolutely beautiful place and nothing beats shredding the mountain, being out in nature, and enjoying the beauty of Montana's winter wonderland! The small town of Whitefish is really cute and 'Christmasy' at this time of year. With lots of shops, restaurants, and saloons to visit.
For both New Year's celebrations we bought tickets to the ski hill bar on the mountain. Every year they hire a live band and both times it was packed with people from all over the place (surprisingly a majority of the people are from Calgary though!).
We danced all night to the live music, mingled, and eventually did the big countdown! People were standing on tables and chairs, champagne was again exploding at every corner of the bar, and everyone was throwing party favors in the air! This celebration was great and lots of fun! We eventually called it a night and finished off with a hot tub and some laughs!
All in all, Whitefish was an absolute blast and I suggest you book for next year if you aren't down with a tropical getaway! If you do book - make sure you book at least 4 months in advance so you can get one of the better accommodations on the hill - it books up fast!
... New Years is just around the corner!!
What are your plans for this year?!

The X Factor Finalists - Update!
Well, it's getting down to the nitty gritty with the last remaining finalists. It's been an intense few weeks with some shocking results. As of tonight's result show (Thursday, November 29) - the top six still left in the competition (in order of ranking with the most votes) are:
- Carly Rose Sonenclar - With Mentor: Britney Spears
- Tate Stevens - With Mentor: L.A. Reid
- Emblem 3 - With Mentor: Simon Cowell
- Fifth Harmony - With Mentor: Simon Cowel
- CeCe Frey - With Mentor: Demi Lovato
- Diamond White - With Mentor: Britney Spears
This week Paige Thomas was the first to be sent home with the lowest amount of votes, which was quite shocking to the audience and the judges - seeing as last night's performance was one of her strongest yet.
Diamond White and Vino Alan were the next two in the bottom with the lowest votes and were required to sing-off for survival. Diamond White had a strong performance in the sing-off and was ultimately saved from elimination - L.A Reid being the only one voting to send her home. Unfortunately, Vino Alan was the second to be sent home this week - having Simon, Demi, and Britney all voting to eliminate him from the competition.
Personally from watching the live show last night, I thought CeCe Frey and Vino Alan had the weakest performances of the bunch. Not only did CeCe have a poor performance, but she has consistently been in the bottom for the last few weeks. Last night L.A Reid said to her: "At least you're going down fighting"! Simon Cowell also told her: "Get ready to pack your bags"! Well, they were both wrong - this girl is somehow hanging on for dear life in this competition. It will be interesting to see what she pulls out of her sleeve next week!
I thought for sure CeCe would be doomed this week with her mediocre performance; thinking that she would finally be knocked out of the competition for good. Although, when she ended up placing fifth in votes tonight, I was definitley in a little bit of shock (and I think some of the judges were too)!
Even though I thought Vino had a weak performance and his song choice was poor, I still felt as though he was more well liked then say, Fifth Harmony. Therefore I believed he at least had a chance to survive another week or so in the competition - hopefully choosing a better song choice for the following week... but so much for that belief!
It's hard to know what's going to happen seeing as America's the one doing the voting - you never know who's going to be safe.
Who do you think is going to be the winner of the 5 million dollar prize and recording contract?
I personally believe it's between Carly Rose, Emblem 3, or possibly Tate Stevens. Definitely leaning more towards Carly Rose or Emblem 3.
I'm excited for the next few weeks! Make sure to stay tuned!
Calgary Hot Spots
I. Love. Food.
I basically love anything food related - from trying out a restaurant I know nothing about and have never been to; enjoying an array of random appetizers and cocktails; trying different ethnic foods; going out on a limb to try something "odd" (I'll usually always try something once); taste testing different wines and pairing them with certain foods; or even going for something simple and relaxed - like tasty wings, nachos, and a beer at a local pub!

Nothing beats an awesome restaurants atmosphere, amazing food, and a place that has staff that's on the ball. I'm always looking for a hot spot that offers something unique and different for their customers - really enhancing a guests' dinning experience. If you can find this combination, it can be an absolutely fabulous time!
I find that in Calgary there always seems to be a new hot spot or something in the works that's opening soon - all these restaurants attempting to be different and better then the rest. There's even those places that have been around for ages and A) you've just never made it to them, B) you didn't even know they existed, or C) they always looked like a dingy hole in the wall and you were hesitant to try it out (when in reality - it's actually a delicious hidden gem)!
With that being said, there are so many options in this city - although it seems almost impossible to be able to try them all. I also find that it's sometimes hard to know where one should go and what's even good these days. Not only is figuring out which place you should go to hard, but it all depends on your cravings, if you've heard good things or recommendations about them, if you can get a table, if you can find parking, if you know where these places even are, and the list goes on and on. There's nothing worse than ending up going to a mediocre venue and having a below par dining experience!

Therefore, when I'm trying to decide I use an app called Where To! I like this app and it gives you many selections on all different categories of food and restaurants - ranging from Afgan to Welsh (haha, random I know)... but you name it, they probably have it!
This app provides you with a list of restaurants in your area, or you can search in whatever area of the city you wish. It tells you the distance to the restaurant, has the restaurant's ratings, as well as connects with Google Maps to direct you to the restaurant. It also gives the phone number to call and make a reservation, as well as the website link if you wish to view the menu. I find this is extremely helpful when I want to try something different or am having trouble deciding on a where to go.
When I have free time from school, I try to visit some of these hot spots. I'm always looking for a good place to tryout and recommend to friends - and I've recently been to a few different places this month! As I stated before, I know it's hard always figuring out a place to go unless you have a recommendation or something - so I'll give some of my personal suggestions with the places I went to this month that were really delicious and fun!
Calgary Hot Spot Recommendations:
- Candela

If you enjoy food and a great dinning experience as much as I do - I would definitely suggest visiting some of these places if you're looking for a good place to go with family or friends.
If you have any suggestions or recommendations for places you really like - feel free to pass them along!
I'm always looking for my next Calgary Hot Spots!!
Quickie Dieting: Worth It, Or Not?
With the increasing pressure to be thin in today's society, it can sometimes be hard not to give in to the many diets that claim to help you lose five pounds in one week. I am not going to deny that I haven't tried any of these diets, because I have, but you really need to look at the pros and cons to these claims and decide whether or not they are worth it in the end; by no means am I promoting the idea of being unhealthy, as each individual should love their body and focus on being healthy, not "skinny." I generally decide it's time to get into shape weeks before I am going on a vacation, and feel the need to be "bikini ready;" lets just say it rarely works, but yet I still fall into the same trap every time.
I've tried doing diets where you only eat certain foods, but really it just leaves you craving all of those "forbidden" foods that much more. Although these diets claim to work and detoxify your body, in the end you can't live off of one specific food for your entire life, and that weight will eventually just come right back. Another diet that I thought would work was the meal replacement diet, where you drink shakes rather than eat daily meals. Once again, this diet may work in the short term but in the end you crave certain foods , and the weight is added right back on. In the end, none of these diets are really worth it in the long run. If you only wanted to lose weight for a short period of time they would work, but society should focus on being healthy, not necessarily skinny.
The focus on being healthy is a lot more important than looking the way society feels individuals should look. I am a pretty small person, who people laugh at when I say I wanna lose weight, but in the end it's not about losing weight, it's about feeling healthy and good about myself. The best solution to all of this is not the fad diets that are advertised everywhere, but the idea of just eating healthier in general and eating in moderation, as well as a good amount of physical activity. I absolutely LOVE junk food and that is one of the hardest things to cut out while trying to be healthy, but I always remind myself to just eat them in moderation; rather than eating a whole bag of chips when I watch TV, just have a handful as it will control my craving just as much as the entire bag. In the end I just focus on picking healthier choices and living life to the fullest.
When it comes to the exercise part of being healthy, I am not very good, as I hate going to gyms filled with people and really have no desire to go outside to exercise. I found my best workout friend to be The Biggest Loser for Wii. You get to choose what your goals are, whether you wanna lose weight or gain muscle, and it is quite a tough workout. You can also add in your meals for the day to track your calories consumed vs. calories burned. The best part of the entire game is the fact that is done just like the television show, with weekly weigh-ins and individuals going home; it really helps to keep you motivated.
Last but not least, keeping hydrated is one of the best solutions to keeping healthy, especially while exercising. I am not one to drink lots of water, as I really just do not enjoy it, but it can be so beneficial in feeling healthy and keeping you going all day. Personally, I have found that I need to drink flavored water, such as Crystal Light, but that can get quite expensive in the end. Just like many other individuals, I spend a lot of my spare time browsing Pinterest, which is where I found my replacement for plain water. Jillian Michael's, from the Biggest Loser, has a recipe that is meant to help lose water weight, but I completely enjoy the drink and have made it my replacement for water. The recipe for the drink is as follows:

Who's Next to Tie the Knot?
We all know them. Two very talented and attractive actors who got together and have been together for the past 7 years. They recently got engaged earlier this year and have 6 children together. You guessed it... Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie or better known as Brangelina.
Despite their agreement to not get married until everyone in America had that right, they decided to take the leap. The question is when will they actually say the 'I Do's' and sign the legal documents? Well it apparently shouldn't take long.
Brad claims his children are putting most of the pressure on them and they too feel the time is right. They have not yet and will not disclose the date, location or the dress, mostly because that has yet to be decided. They say they want a small wedding with just their family and closest friends. As for the location, well because they are both traveling constantly Brad admits it will be "a matter of convenience location-wise".
Personally, I think these two have a high chance of making their marriage work. They seem to be the one couple who has lasted so long already and have managed to work through any issues shown on the media (whether they actually exist or not). I really like them as a couple as well. They don't flaunt their children or personal life in the media and they seem really down to earth. I also really enjoy them in the movies they have played, especially Angelina Jolie.
Pitt, 48, said “I don’t know what’s going to happen in two weeks. I certainly don’t know what the New Year is going to bring!"
Well I for one, can only hope Pitt and Jolie, 37, make the marriage official sooner than later. I am very curious to see what her dress looks like.

Well I for one, can only hope Pitt and Jolie, 37, make the marriage official sooner than later. I am very curious to see what her dress looks like.
Wreck-It Ralph
Now I know that some people think that being in University makes you too old to still be watching animated movies but I for one still absolutely love them! Some of my favorites include How To Train You Dragon, Shrek and Tangled! An new animated movie that has recently been released that I'm really excited to see is Wreck-It Ralph.
Wreck-It Ralph is a movie about a video game character named Ralph who in almost every video game has to play the villain. Ralph is tired of always having to be the villain and for once in his life wants to do something good in his life. So Ralph sets out to help people rather than harm them and to be able to be the hero for once in his life. Along the way he meets a few other crazy characters Fix-It Felix, Jr. and Vanellope Von Schweetz.
Both of these characters seem like there going to be extremely funny, cute and entertaining to watch. I personally can't wait to see this movie! I feel like its been awhile since an actual decent animated movie has come out. A lot of kids movies these days in my opinion seem to dumb down the story of the movie for lots of kids. I think that a good animated movie is a movie that the whole family can sit down and watch together. Wreck-It Ralph may be that movie! I recommend that you go watch the trailer of this movie to see whether or not you agree with me! The link to this trailer can be found HERE!
So do any of you think that you'll go see Wreck-It Ralph? And if not why?

Latest Wardrobe Malfunction
It happens occasionally in the celebrity world. They decide to wear something daring and end up paying the price when their wardrobe falls to pieces. Take Janet Jackson for instance and her 2004 Superbowl incident with Justin Timberlake or the many celebrities having issues getting out of low vehicles. I think most of us connect wardrobe malfunction with exposing unwanted parts. The latest to experience a wardrobe malfunction is innocent pop country star, Taylor Swift.
Taylor Swift is such a good role model for her fans. She is never seen at the clubs, having dramatic lawsuits or getting a DUI. So as a good role model you would think a wardrobe malfunction could cause some serious damage to her reputation. However, this is a wardrobe malfunction unlike any other.
This past weekend in Las Vegas at an iHeartRadio festival, while starting her performance in the middle of the crowd, Taylor Swift's dress strap comes undone and falls to her front. Rather than exposing a bra or something possibly worse, her malfunction only exposes another shirt! That's right, her wardrobe resulted in no embarrassment or criticism, but rather pride and support. I mean how can you criticize a singer for wearing a backup shirt during a performance?

When Taylor Swift realized what had happened she had no sign of concern on her face, but rather continued on with her performance and casually tucked in the strap before she walked on stage. After she finished the song she quickly exited to the backstage where they attempted to fix the dress. With no luck, Taylor Swift smoothly returned on stage with the backup shirt on and a pair of black shorts, which had apparently been under her dress as well.
Leave it to Taylor Swift to do a wardrobe malfunction rated G. I for one love her as a singer and even if I didn't a stunt like this would have to gain my respect for her. She only continues to make a positive image for herself.

Justin Bieber Disrespects Prime Minister
As many of you might now this past Sunday was the 100th Grey Cup. Since it was the 100th anniversary of the Grey Cup this year there were many extremely successful Canadian celebrities in the city of Toronto to help celebrate the event. Some of these Celebrities included Carly Rae Jespsen, Gordon Lightfoot and last but not least Justin Bieber.
Not only was Justin performing at the Grey Cup half-time show this weekend he was also in town to accept the Diamond Jubilee Medal. Now this is where things got interesting. Upon meeting the Prime Minister Beiber walked into the room supporting a backwards baseball cap, white t-shirt and coveralls!
Since the meet Justin has been criticized by both the media and Canadian citizens about how his attire at this event was completely disrespectful to the Prime Minister. Many have been saying that he should have changed before he came to the meeting. In his defense Bieber has stated that he was coming straight from a meet and greet with fans and didn't have time to change.
The Prime Minister on the other hand didn't seemed offended at all by Justin's choice of clothing and was all smiles and during the meeting.
Personally, I think that Justin's choice of clothing to meet the Prime Minister probably wasn't the best fashion choice he's ever made but, at the same time he is much more busy than the average Canadian 18 year old and his clothing choice is probably the last thing on his mind sometimes.
So what do you think. Do you think Justin wearing overalls to meet the Prime Minister was disrespectful? Or something that just couldn't be helped?
Can't wait to hear what you all think!

Two and a Half Men Cursed?
Ex-star, Charlie Sheen has made yet another statement about the TV series Two and a Half Men, saying "it is radically clear the show is cursed." This is based on a video posted by a Christian Church with Angus T. Jones on it, stating the show is "filth" and asking viewers to "Please stop watching it."
Wow, I don't know about the rest of you, but that one caught me completely off guard. I for one, enjoy that show and can only hope my favorite character, Jake, does not get the cut like Charlie. I also couldn't be more curious as to why Angus would make a comment like that out of the blue. Could it be their management, contract issues or unreasonable production requirements? I suppose there are too many possibilities to really narrow it down, especially since Angus gave no clue as to what the issue is.
It could be hard to tell what the outcome could be from these public comments as a source has said Jake does not show up in the next two shows before the end of year. That means if he does continue to be a star on the show, it won't be until the new year that he appears on another episode.
It appears as though Angus' reasons for his comments are due to his "search for a spiritual home." He states he is "not OK with what [he's] learning, what the Bible says, and being on that television show.” My question is, what exactly are they learning on that show? I know, as a viewer, the show doesn't reflect the best morals, but I never would have thought it could have such a negative impact on the actors.
His blunt, public statement of not wanting to be on the show anymore due to its interference with his religious beliefs is actually quite surprising. As a star on the show for the past 9 years it's refreshing to see an actor, especially a child actor, not fall under the 'spell' of Hollywood.
Personally I think that if Jake's character gets cut off the show, I don't see Two and a Half Men lasting much longer. Having to replace 2 stars on the show within two years would not be good for ratings.Since Charlie was killed of the show, the number of viewers has dropped from 20 million to 14.5 million per episode and I only see those declining further if Jake was removed from the series. However, this is just based on my opinion because I find Jake to be the most humorous on the show. There is always the possibility for the show to regain its original popularity, but I think it would take some time if they got rid of Jake.
Is it just coincidence that two stars on the show have expressed their feelings about the show in such a negative, "dramatic fashion"?

American Stores Coming to Canada!
It shouldn't be news to anyone that one of the biggest American retail stores, Target, is coming to Canada in 2013. The news had been rumored for months and when it was finally confirmed, the information went viral. It seems that Target isn't the only American based stored that will be coming to our city in the near future, as their have recently been confirmations that the department store, Nordstrom, will also be opening a Calgary store sometime in 2013. Many have began to question why we are constantly bringing American owned companies into Canada, as we should be focusing on promoting, as well as supporting, locally owned businesses. Personally, I absolutely love both of these stores and could not be more excited for them to join our shopping centers in the near future.
I often travel down to the United States for vacations each year, and one of the biggest things i look forward to is shopping at all of the different stores they have. Although the stores are not too different than the ones we have here, the products can be completely different, and often quite exciting. It's almost as if a trip to the grocery store in the United States is a huge outing, as if you were going to the amusement park; there is never a lack of excitement, at least for me! The one item I seem to get most excited about is Vanilla Coke, as it was my favorite pop while it was here in Canada. I generally try to bring home as much as I can, and drink as much as I can while I am down there. Part of me has began to wonder though, with all this excitement of these new stores coming to Calgary, will they really be any different than what we already have? As it seems the only thing that does make them any different, is their products.
With Target taking over the previous places of Zellers, I really think that all we are going to see is a revamped version of the Canadian store. I'm sure it will be a lot more interesting for the first few months, until people come to a realization that it really is not that different. I hope this is not that case at all and that Target will be able to bring in lots of the products they offer within the United States, but I am currently trying not to get my hopes up too much. Unlike Target, I think Nordstrom will be an entirely different story, following more in the footsteps of its American stores. Being a clothing based department store, I think it would be a lot easier for the company to receive similar items such as the newest fashion trends. Being quite a "fancy" department store, I am intrigued to see what the Canadian versions will look like. I couldn't believe my eyes after I had stepped into a Nordstrom washroom in Arizona, as there was a full separate seating area for guests, lined with couches and coffee tables, as well as TVs throughout the entire bathroom. Many of you may think that we do have all those luxuries here, but they are nothing to the extent of the one I had seen in this store.
Now I have to ask, who else is excited for the arrival of these stores? And if you're not, why? Do you think there are any repercussions to bringing in American based stores, and should we focus more on supporting our local retailers. I think that yes, we should continue to support our locally owned businesses, but at the same time, these companies may end up being a huge benefit to our society in several different ways. Also, with rumors swirling, are there any other American businesses that you would like to see come into Canada?

The Kardashian Takeover
It's rare to go to the grocery store these days without seeing one of the Kardashian sister's on the front cover of a magazine. Kim, Kourtney and Khloe have taken over the world of public media with the empire they have created over the past several years. If you are unsure as to how the Kardashian family came to be in the public eye, you are not alone! Many people wonder how these girls became famous, as they don't seem to do much, other than own some businesses and appear on several reality shows. The truth is the girls are famous due to their father, Robert Kardashian, who was the defence lawyer in the OJ Simpson murder trial in 1995, sadly he passed away from esophageal cancer in 2003, but his family has managed to keep their name in the public eye.
Before they became known in the public eye the sister ran their own little boutique in Calabasas, California, known as DASH. It wasn't until the sisters, as well as their mother, stepfather and siblings signed on to do a reality TV series that the family became extremely famous. Keeping Up with the Kardashians has followed the family throughout the last six years, with several spin offs including Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami, Khloe and Lamar and Kourtney and Kim Take New York. Generally, I have watched all of these shows as a sort of guilty pleasure and I was completely aware of their involvement in the spotlight, but it didn't hit me until the other day when I was at work when I saw there faces on every single gossip magazine on the newsstands.
Each week there seems to be a new baby being added to the family, a new romance or a divorce occurring with at least one of the Kardashians. This week it seems that Kourntey and her long time boyfriend, Scott Disick, got into a huge argument after a marriage proposal that went terribly wrong. Kourtney had reportedly asked for a prenup to protect her fortune, which sent Scott on a rampage. This most certainly isn't the first, nor will it be the last, of the tabloid stories surrounding this couple. Kourtney isn't the only one who suffers from relationship stories spread throughout the media, Khloe has recently been the tabloids top pick when it comes to her relationship with husband Lamar Odom.
Every week they are one step closer to a divorce due to several different factors, such as distance and infidelity. Kim's highly profiled relationship with Kris Humphries is still a huge part of the media, as the two are going through a highly publicized divorce, all while Kim has began her new relationship with rapper, Kanye West. According to reports the two on the road to marriage and children, all before her divorce to Kris is finalized. Every member of the Kardashian family has found themselves in the tabloids week after week, but it seems these three just keep the stories coming.
Personally, I used to find their shows extremely entertaining, they were easy to watch and didn't take much energy to focus on, but I have found lately that as they get even more famous the show has begun to lose its appeal. All the shows do know is follow their lives around while they do their day-to-day photo shoots or interviews, and it really isn't all that exciting anymore. I don't mind watching Kourtney and Khloe, as they seem to have a more down-to-earth spirit, mainly focusing on their relationships and children, but Kim seems almost too caught up in her own celebrity to give anything beneficial to the show. I do still watch the show from time to time, but often find myself yelling at the TV when Kim is on another one of her hissy fits. Plus, why watch the show when you can read all about it in a magazine the next week.
The unfortunate thing about the stories these magazines put out, real or fiction, is that people die for them and will continue to pay for them until publishing stops. I'm not going to lie, I used to be that person that bought every tabloid each week and sit down and read them for hours, essentially living off the gossip that was being fed to me, but then I began to wonder: when does it stop? The stories these companies put out can be extremely absurd and I can't even imagine the effects they can have on the celebrities themselves, as well as their families. Could you imagine walking into a grocery store to see a magazine with your daughter on front claiming she had a quick marriage to her boyfriend of only two weeks? I would imagine that would break your heart a little each time you read such a ridiculous story, later finding out it wasn't true at all. I would have to say that the huge factor that caused me to stop purchasing these magazines was seeing the effect the paparazzi had on the life of Britney Spears. Although her breakdown was bound to happen, due to a mental disorder, the constant need for that "perfect" picture drove these individuals to follow her every move and I thought to myself, maybe if people stop paying for the gossip they produce, maybe it will all stop. It's hard to see such young stars being harassed by the media every day of their life, and I really hope the Kardashian family doesn't have to experience any heartbreak due to the works of the media, but unfortunately it often comes to that.
Overall, what do you guys think about the Kardashian family? Have you ever watched their shows or kept up with their stories? And if you have, when has the line been crossed with the lives of celebrities and their personal lives?

Justin and Selena: Together or Not?
This is a question that has been driving popular media sites, such as Perez Hilton, for the last week. It seems everyday there is a new story surrounding their on-again, off-again relationship. The news that the popular couple had decided to call it quits within the past weeks broke just over a week ago, according to a source close to the couple. At first there was much speculation about the claim, as it seems the two have split several times throughout their relationship, but this time it seemed to be true and it wasn't long until the media decided to get involved.
After the breakup, rumors began to swirl about what caused such a sudden decision between the two, and almost no one involved with the couple was left "uninvolved." The first rumored cause of the split was Justin's involvement with Victoria's Secret model, Barbara Palvin. After Selena tweeted a picture of the two with the caption, "......" many began to wonder if jealousy had caused the two to go separate ways. Barbara wasn't the only young star that was quickly blamed for the breakup, Miley Cyrus was next. The next source came forward claiming that Selena was absolutely disgusted by her fellow Disney star, and that she could have reason for the breakup, as another reported breakup had been caused by Justin's involvement with Miley on the MTV series Punk'd. The next breakup rumor turned the jealousy page over to Justin himself, claiming that he was absolutely furious when he saw a photo of Selena kissing her Parental Guidance Suggested costar, Nat Wolff. Although the photo was obviously taken on set, it had apparently caused enough drama to cause an issue. These rumors continued to swirl, but it wasn't long until reconciliation rumors began to contradict the breakup.
A few days after the news broke, it only took a few days for rumors to begin circulating that the two had headed toward a reconciliation. The first rumor claimed that the two had decided to have an "intense" conversation to try and work things out. After reports that Selena couldn't stand to be near her ex-boyfriend, cancelling her appearance at the American Music Awards, another source claimed to have seen the two meeting at the Beverly Hills Hotel for a private dinner date, photos quickly surfaced to support the claims. The joyous reconciliation once again didn't last long, when Selena reportedly stormed out of their dinner date after a heated argument. Despite claims that Selena had decided not to go to the American Music Awards, due to her breakup, it turned out that the two attended the after party together, looking like a couple that were much in love with each other. One more meeting was caught by the paparazzi, with their relationship currently on good terms, according to the media.
Personally, I think this whole situation is really no one elses business and the two should be left alone to deal with whatever issues, if any, that they have in their relationship. Even though being famous comes with the several costs, including the paparazzi, there are some points of an individuals life that should be allowed to be kept a secret. Both Selena and Justin, are young stars who deserve the privacy of their relationships, as I am sure the situation would be hard enough to deal with, without being in the public eye. What do you think about the whole situation, should they just deal with the consequences of being famous, or should there be some limits to a celebrity's private life.
